Squeeze vs Bid

Bitcoin rallied about 23% last week. The first leg was a record short squeeze. The follow-through was real ETF cash. They are not the same kind of flow.

Read

How the tape actually printed.

  • Ignition

    Wed 19 Aug
    Squeeze 80%New bid 20%

Forced covering did the first violent leg. Record short liquidations hit in hours. ETF bid was present ($517M) but secondary to the cascade.

  • Extension

    Thu–Fri 20–21 Aug
    Squeeze 40%New bid 60%

Squeeze fuel fades as shorts are already out. Spot ETF prints ($606M then $307M) are what held and extended the move instead of a one-day spike.

Daily tape

Bars are BTC ETF inflows (left axis). Line is BTC close (right). The $2.74B short spike sits on Wednesday — too large to plot on the same axis without crushing the bid.

Wed 19: shorts $2.74B · ETF $0.517B · BTC $69,244. High $79,405 on Friday.

What lit it

Macro first. Positioning second. Policy overlay.

  1. Treasury long-bond buybacks doubled

    Wed 19

Bessent: long-dated buybacks to ≥$4B per operation. Yields dropped, dollar softened, risk bid returned.

  2. White House crypto meeting

    Wed 19

Trump met Coinbase and other execs; pushed the Senate on the Clarity Act.

  3. Shorts flushed

    Wed–Thu

About $2.74B shorts closed 19 Aug (Coinglass). Two-day shorts ~$3.1B. BTC shorts ~$1.1–1.65B of that.

  4. Spot ETF cash returned

    Mon–Fri

U.S. BTC ETFs +$1.92B on the week. BTC+ETH ETFs +$2.62B. Strongest week since Oct 2025.

Method

Do not add $2.74B to $1.92B and call it demand.

  • Liquidation notional is leveraged position size forced closed — not net new dollars. A $2.7B wipe is taker-buy flow concentrated in minutes, not $2.7B of fresh capital.
  • ETF inflows are actual cash that buys (or creates) BTC. $1.92B is slower, stickier demand.
  • Daily short figures after 19 Aug overlap in 24h windows. We plot the record day as a spike and do not invent a clean daily shorts series.
  • The 80/20 then 40/60 split is a tape read, not a measured attribution.

Squeezes start moves. ETF bid decides whether they stick. This week had both.
